Absolute power corrupts Absolutely
A famous sentence of Lord Acton, a British historian of late 19th & early 20th century, which I, personally, truly agrees with.Power diminishes a person's sense of morality & humanity, intending to carry any barbarity just for the sake of more & more as the urge for power never ends. Those in power often do not have the people's benefit & interest in mind, primarily focusing only on their own benefits & can abuse their position of power to help & benefit themselves. No law or rules could harm a hair from the head of those power-holders & no-one could harm them a bit also.Power cause people to loose their humanity & go stone-cold by slaying their morals, manners & actions. It can be an individual or a group politically or financially influenced. Turning their virtues towards vice. While greater power in hands enable quick decision-making & efficiency, making the person feel that he, himself is a God,a supreme power capable of doing anything.
Though, I agree, of those who are corrupted it's hard to distinguish whether the power corrupted the men or the men who were drawn to power were already corrupted.
Every age is the example of this practice, firstly fighting for absolute power & then manipulating it accordingly.Taking lives of many either because they are the threat to his power or a ladder for achievement of more. Adolf Hitler, Stalin, Mao are some reknowned personalities who caused many barbarity & atrocities for the absolute power & also to publicise & imprint their power in pages of history to invoke fear among common souls. In fact, pages of history cries out about thousands of cases where for the sake of extreme power(monarchy, administrative-head..) cold-blooded murders took place. Urge for Power took millions of lives even having a blind eye towards blood-relationships too.
Yes, I agree, there are some leaders with good & impressive thoughts & actions. Who took steps for prosperity & happiness of civilians but at the same time a very large number of those who for the sake of power & to maintain it, stained their hands with blood of thousands & spreading fear with silent hatred in the citizen's heart with their atrocities.
